Julie Baker Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of "Storytellers" new works by Sacramento artist Jack Alvarez and Grass Valley resident Menlo Macfarlane. Each artist tells a story through their paintings and works on paper but in very different ways.
Alvarez, a third generation Mexican American explores spiritual themes related to life, death and after life. Discarding the use of a narrator or central figure, Alvarez uses symbols found in the pottery and textiles of his ancestors such as vessels, crosses and baskets, to give the viewer guides to explore his surrealist landscapes. Rich in texture and color, his works invite the viewer to explore the drama and intrigue of personal history, ancestry, spirituality and some of life's larger questions.
Performer, artist, choreographer, teacher, Menlo Macfarlane's paintings delight and engage. A storyteller by nature, the paintings unfold in vivid narratives to reveal characters engaged in a visual drama of collage, abstraction and representation. Macfarlane's cast of characters reappear as he develops new works that are immersed in a theatrical display of texture, line, color and descending values of light. Whimsical titles such as "Degroot and Friends in a Field of Truffles" and "Woman Overboard" complete the narration.
"Storytellers" opens Friday, January 30 from 6 to 8pm. Show runs through March 13, 2004.
