Julie Baker Fine Art presents a summer show that features contemporary artwork that - in both content and style - is complimentary to the sentiment of the season. "In the Garden" is a group show featuring six artists that take various paths to express the beauty of flora and fauna. Artist Jenny Honnert Abell collages intricate, discrete elements to create abstract images of flowers, while Sky Hoyt's jubilant oil paintings celebrate the season's bounty in a style that nods to Matisse. Jen Garrido paints sumptuously textured images of brightly hued silhouettes that make reference to animals and trees yet stay firmly footed in abstraction. And Nevada City resident Willie Little creates paintings that incorporate gardening implements in mixed media vignettes that reference the matrilineal gardens of his youth. Also featured in the show are Cara Enteles' insect-inspired works on aluminum and Victoria Wagner's paintings of lushly embellished organic forms.

In the Project Room will be ceramic sculpture by Suzanne Long. Long creates work that toes the line between whimsy and melancholy. Her ceramic forms connote childhood toys and beloved storybook characters, yet surprise the viewer with incised poems, parables, and text that disrupt initial expectations with philosophical questions and fragmented stories. Works like a monkey reciting Plato are both humorous and serious - a theme the runs throughout Long's pieces.

"In the Garden" opens on Friday, July 1st with an artist's reception from 6pm - 8pm. The show runs through August 13th. Julie Baker Fine Art is located in historical downtown Grass Valley at 120 N. Auburn Street, Suite 100. Gallery hours are 11am - 5pm Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment. Visit the gallery online at www.juliebakerfineart.com. For more information call (530) 273-0910
