Julie Baker Fine Art celebrates the one year anniversary with the opening of the second annual "Baker's Dozen" featuring 13 works by 13 artists from Northern California and the East Coast.

To choose the 13 artists Julie Baker reviewed the work of over 200 artists from around the country.

In large part the show became more regionally focused because Ms. Baker prefers to choose work by visiting artist’s studios rather than through slides. It is also interesting to note that nine of the thirteen are women. "I never set out to find work by a specific gender, but I have found I often respond to work by women. As a woman owned gallery I am thrilled to support women artists."

This year’s show includes sculpture, works on paper and paintings. "I tend to choose work that I believe people will want to live worth for many years", says Baker. "I am drawn to abstraction, organic materials, storytelling, texture and vibrant imagery". Each artist is invited to show only one work in the show. "By showing one piece by each artist, the viewer has the opportunity to see a wide variety of work under one roof."

The show also features a "Source Room" in which each artist has supplied a self-portrait, a studio photo and a statement. "The intention of this room is to humanize the works selected in the show and to give viewers a sense of the artist’s environment and purpose.

Also on view, in association with Gallery Paule Anglim, "Overhead", an ongoing installation by David Ireland nationally acclaimed conceptual artist, and gallery co-founder Richard Baker.

Julie Baker Fine Art draws on art resources from around the country and brings them to Grass Valley in California's Gold Country. The gallery offers museum quality exhibitions with extensive educational and cultural programs. The setting is bucolic, the aesthetic is sophisticated and contemporary.

Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11am - 5pm and by appointment.
