Julie Baker is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Alexandra Eldridge. In her quest for what is sacred in art and spirituality, Alexandra Eldridge's paintings take you on a journey inspired by the symbols, text and imagery of 18th Century English artist William Blake’s naive and illuminated manuscripts, black Madonnas and Parisian flea markets. Her work is lyrical, romantic, raw and transformational.

Eldridge works with Venetian plaster creating images with pigment, pencil, and elements of collage. To create texture she scratches through layers of plaster with razor blades. She burnishes the final layer to make the work shine and reveal the colors beneath The colorful surfaces are distressed and incised with symbols and icons of self-discovery.

“Perhaps crafted intuitively more than with set intention, Eldridge’s paintings appeal on the surface for their loveliness. They also work at the unconscious level, with their rich archetypal symbols.” – Dottie Indyke, Artnews, September 2002.

Born in New Jersey, Alexandra currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition to Julie Baker Fine Art, Eldridge exhibits with Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe and Weber Fine Art in New York.

Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm and by appointment.
